Sir Francis: el aparato

tackle, the.
Man: Good morning, I’ve come about the baby.
Woman: Oh, yes, good morning, won’t you come in?
Man: I hope this is a convenient time?
Woman: Yes, of course, put your bag down, Mr...?
Man: Jones...Well, let’s get on with it: To start with, I suggest    two on the settee, two             on the mat, and one or two naked  on the bed...
Woman (alarmed): You’re not going to do it now! I thought this was just to discuss it!
Man: Madam, your husband placed a firm order and paid. I wouldn’t like to come more than is necessary. Half a dozen shots now, and one is sure to produce an attractive baby. I’m a busy man, I’ve got two more to do this morning.
     Woman: Two more...!
Man: Yes, first a model who wants to try various positions in a topless dress, and then some nuns who want me to take them in a group. On their knees. Part of a religious ceremony, I presume.
Woman: Well, you do get around, don’t you?
Man. Yes, indeed. Want to see some samples? (shows her some photos of babies). Here’s a good one. Mother, a film actress, divorced, but she wanted one for publicity. I only had the chance of one shot, too.
     Woman: Only one shot?
Man: Yes, I got it on top of a moving bus and every time the bus turned a corner, she rolled off the seat..., and here’s another good one. I did that in Hyde Park when the ground was covered with snow, and the ducks kept pecking at my equipment.
     Woman: Oh, goodness, there’s twins!
Man: Ah, yes, that was sensational. The mother was so pleased and excited that she paid me double.
Woman: Well, I think perhaps we’d better get on with it.
Man: Of course, just let me get my tackle ready.
     Woman: But, isn’t it?
Man: yes, I mean, I just have to get it out, you see, I always think you can get the best results with a three-foot stand...(The woman faints).

Mujer (alarmada): ¿No irá a hacerlo ahora?
Hombre: ¿Quiere ver muestras?

"How was the film?" "Fairly good" ("¿qué tal la película?" "bastante buena/no está mal")
My son speaks German fairly well" (mi hijo habla alemán bastante bien - pero no perfectamente)

- con comparativos y delante de too, solo se usa rather: rather better (bastante mejor), rather too long (demasiado largo), etc.
- or rather - valor rectificativo o matizador, con el significado de 'o más bien/o mas exactamente/o mejor': He went to bed very late last night, or rather in the early hours of the morning (se acostó muy tarde anoche, o más bien de madrugada).

Recordemos finalmente, para completar los significados con rather, la expresión I would rather/he would rather, etc., contraída generalmente a I'd rather/he'd rather, etc. (usada para expresar preferencia) infinitivo-sin-to-html :  I'd rather leave (prefiero irme), I'd rather you left (prefiero que te vayas).

Quite

He speaks English quite well - habla inglés bastante bien (pero no llega a la perfección)
I quite like her  - me gusta bastante (pero no es una de mis mejores amigas, por ejemplo)
It took quite a long time - llevó bastante tiempo (mejor que it took a quite long time)
Quite a bit y quite a few equivalen a quite a lot: He's having quite a bit of trouble with spelling - está teniendo bastantes problemas con la ortografía; we thought no one would attend our concert, but quite a few people came - creíamos que no iba a asistir nadie a nuestro concierto, pero vino bastante gente.

b) 'Completamente', 'totalmente':

That's quite impossible - eso es totalmente imposible

What you're suggesting is quite ridiculous - lo que estás sugiriendo es completamente ridículo
You're quite wrong - estás totalmente equivocado.
I'm not quite sure - no estoy completamente seguro.

Pretty

1.- The patient is .............better today.
2.- I ...............like jazz.
3.- Well, their music is..............good.
4.- I'm afraid what you want is ...........impossible.
5.- I.............expected we'd win.

13.- He's got ..........a few friends in Italy.

Sir Francis: falsos amigos

actual no significa ‘actual’ (current/present), sino ‘real, verdadero’
to resume no es ‘resumir’ (to summarize), sino ‘reanudar’
sensible no significa ‘sensible’ (sensitive), sino ‘sensato’

Para conocer más ejemplos de 'falsos amigos', ver en mi libro Short Stories to Help You Increase Your Vocabulary, pp. 84-85, 254-256 y 372-373.

Nursery Rhyme: Eena, meena, mina, mo

Now that a new course has just begun, nostalgic memories of the time when I taught English Grammar, Phonetics and English Lexicography at the University keep coming to my mind. Here is, as an example, the following nursery rhyme:

Eena, meena, mina, mo,
Catch a chicken by his toe;
If he squeaks, let him go,
Eena, meena, mina, mo.

This is undoubtedly the most popular rhyme for counting out a player in children's games, but I used it in my classes to invite the 'lucky winner' to 'volunteer' for an exercise or an activity. It corresponds roughly to the Spanish 'pito, pito, gorgorito, ¿dónde vas tú tan bonito? A la era verdadera, pim, pam, fuera!' Give it a try, dear colleagues, it works.

Pinceladas léxicas: economic/economical

economic reforms (reformas económicas), economic problems (problemas económicos), etc., aunque puede usarse  también para expresar que algo produce beneficios: they argue that it isn't economic any longer to keep the factory open (argumentan que ya no resulta económico mantener la fábrica abierta).

economical (se refiere a que ahorra dinero, esfuerzo o tiempo, que cuesta o gasta poco): an economical car (un coche económico, que gasta poca gasolina), an economical system of heating (un sistema de calefacción económico, que gasta poco), an economical person (una persona ahorrativa, que gasta poco), etc.

Pinceladas gramaticales: zero plural

I've caught only a few fish  Sólo he cogido unos cuantos peces
The list of endangered species includes more than 500 fishes La lista de especies en peligro de extinción incluye más de 500 peces

En ocasiones, el uso oscila:

I’ve caught three little fishes/several fish
