Contable o incontable

                       a table/two tables, etc.
                       a house/some houses, etc.
                       a bottle/several bottles, etc.
                       a book/lots of books, etc.
                       a star/thousands of stars, etc.

a piece/a bit of paper/glass/iron (un trozo de papel/cristal/hierro), an item of furniture/jewellery (un mueble/una joya), two/three/several  pieces/bits of paper (dos/tres/varios trozos de papel, etc), two/several pieces/items of furniture (dos/varios      muebles), pieces of /bits of broken  glass (trozos de cristal roto), a bit of luck/fun (un poco de suerte/diversión), etc.

a loaf of bread - un pan
a clap of thunder - un trueno
         a pinch of salt/pepper - una pizca de sal/pimienta
                     etc.

I'll have a piece of cake - tomaré un trozo de pastel (aquí cake es incontable)
I had lots of cakes - tomé muchos pasteles (aquí cake es contable)
I like wine - me gusta el vino (wine, incontable)
I prefer Spanish wines - prefiero los vinos españoles (wine, contable)
He has no authority over you - él no tiene ninguna autoridad sobre ti (authority, incontable)
She's an authority on English history - ella es una autoridad en historia inglesa (authority, contable).
I'll have some coffee, thank you - tomaré café, gracias (coffee, incontable)

                   iron (incontable) - hierro
                   iron (contable) - plancha

                  paper (incontable) - papel
                  paper (contable) - periódico

                 wood (incontable) - madera
                 wood(s) (contable) - bosque
                etc.

I put egg in the soup?

That's a beautiful piece of furniture - es un mueble precioso

*I've just had a sad news - en vez de

I've just had (some) sad news/a piece of sad news - acabo de tener una mala noticia

*My father gave a good advice, en lugar de

My father gave me (some) good advice/a good piece of advice - mi padre me dio un buen consejo

a pair of trousers/two pairs of trousers, etc.
