Preparing for the 'oposiciones': idioms with 'dog'

The House of Tomorrow

Pinceladas gramaticales: Adjuncts/disjuncts/conjuncts

See you tomorrow/next Sunday/this afternoon, etc.
Let's go for a walk in the park - Demos un paseo por el parque.
My daughter speaks English very well - Mi hija habla inglés muy bien.

Frankly/frankly speaking/to be frank, I'm a bit tired -  Francamente/hablando con franqueza/a decir verdad, estoy un poco cansado.
Obviously, there's nobody at home - Obviamente, no hay nadie en casa.

a) Jenny smiled happily - Jenny sonrió felizmente.
b) Happily, nobody got injured in the accident - Felizmente, nadie resultó herido en el accidente.

I don't feel like going out today. Besides, I have a cold - No me apetece salir hoy. Además, estoy resfriado.
My grandfather is 85. However, he enjoys good health - Mi abuelo tiene 85 años.

a) Though he had studied very hard, he failed his exam - Aunque había estudiado muchísimo, supendió su examen.
b) He studied very hard; he failed, though - Estudió muchísimo; suspendió sin embargo.

He's a very keen sportsman. Moreover, he plays the guitar/He's a very keen sportsman; he, moreover, plays the guitar - Es muy buen deportista. Además, toca la guitarra/Toca, además,la guitarra.

EJERCICIO 1

1.- .....................................................................................

2.- You were out when we called. That was very unfortunate.
2.- ....................................................................................

3.- He didn't tell anybody that he had got married. That's rather odd.
3.- ............................................................................

4.- Nobody saw or heard anything strange. That's surprising.
4.- .......................................................................................

5.- Most of the immigrants living in this area have no residence permit. That's obvious.
5.- .........................................................................................

6.- Unemployment is still our biggest problem. It has to be admitted.
6.- ........................................................

7.- The storm destroyed the entire tobacco crop. It's sad.
7.- .............................................................................

8.- She was extremely annoyed when she received the letter. It's is understandable.
8.- ...........................................................................................

EJERCICIO 2

Completa las oraciones con el conjunct adecuado de entre los siguientes: alternatively, besides, first of all, finally, however, nevertheless, on the contrary, still, then, therefore, though, Usa cada conjunct solamente una vez:

1.- It was a day to forget. ........ a pipe burst, ......his car broke down and ......he lost his job.

3.- You could drive there in four days, or ..........., you could take the plane and be there in a couple of hours.

6.- She's a fine teacher. And ........... she has written a successful novel.

Origin of the English idiom 'a white elephant'

As I said in my previous post, the idiom a white elephant is used to mean 'something that is practically useless, though it may have cost a lot of money'. Today I'll tell you something about its origin. This idiom "comes from the story that kings of Siam gave such animals as a gift to courtiers they wished to ruin".

From Brewer's Dictionary of Phrase and Fable, first published in 1870, but later re-printed many times, the millennium edition, revised by Adrian Room (Cassell, 2000) being my favourite.
