Glosario

- huyendo de los 'ceviles' - fleeing from the civil guards
- un gitano del Perché - a gypsy from El Perchel (El Perchel was a typical district of Málaga, left of the river Guadalmedina, where many gypsies used to live)
- sin cálculo y sin combina - wandering aimlessly
- en dónde vino a caer - where did he get to?
- y cuando se fue a dar cuenta - and first thing he knew
- con los dos se najó - with both of them, he ran away ('najarse' is caló for 'to leave/to go away/to run away)
- y el gitano a su costilla de esta manera le habló - and the gypsy to his better half spoke like this
- ¡osú que miedo chavó! - Jesus, was I scared, mate! ('osú' is the Andalusian pronunciation of the exclamation ¡Jesus!, and 'chavó' is caló for 'guy/fella', but I think in the present case 'mate' may be a better translation)
- porque tiene mucha guasa que yo no pruebe ni un ala - because it would be droll if I didn't taste even a wing
- con los dos trajeló - with both of them, he ate 'trajelar' is also caló for 'to eat').
