Pinceladas léxicas: to win/to earn/to gain/to beat

To win, to earn, to gain y to beat pueden significar todos 'ganar', pero su uso está bien delimitado:

- To win significa 'ganar' en contextos competitivos o en los que interviene la suerte:

to win a game/a match/a cup/a race, etc - ganar un juego/un partido/una copa/una carrera/, etc.
to win a battle/the war - ganar una batalla/la guerra
to win an election - ganar unas elecciones
to win a prize - ganar un premio
to win a case - ganar un caso (un abogado, por ejemplo)
to win at cards/at chess/at tennis, etc. - ganar a las cartas/al ajedrez/al tenis, etc.
to win somebody's approval/trust/love - ganar la aprobación/la confianza/el amor de alguien
to win friends - ganar amigos

- to earn significa 'ganar' con esfuerzo, trabajo o méritos:

to earn money - ganar dinero
to earn a rest - ganarse un descanso
to earn a reputation  as... - ganar fama como... 
to earn a living as...- ganarse la vida como...
to earn the right (to) - ganarse el derecho a.


- to gain significa 'ganar' en el sentido de aumentar o conseguir algo deseado:

to gain speed - aumentar la velocidad
to gain weight - ganar/aumentar peso
to gain experience/support/a reputation - ganar experiencia/conseguir apoyo/fama
to gain in popularity - aumentar la popularidad
to gain time - ganar tiempo

-to beat - significa 'ganar' en el sentido de derrotar, batir, vencer algo o a alguien:

to beat something/somebody  - vencer algo/a alguien
to beat somebody at cards/chess/tennis, etc. - vencer a alguien a las cartas/al ajedrez/al tenis, etc.

PRÁCTICA

Rellena los huecos con la forma adecuada de to win, to earn, to gain to beat, según proceda (en un caso caben dos posibilidades):

1.- The Conservatives will probably...........the next election - los conservadores ganarán probablemente las próximas elecciones
2.- He gradually ...............her confidence - se ganó gradualmente su confianza
3.- I don't think you can ..........this case - no creo que puedas ganar este caso
4.- My boyfriend ...........a few pounds doing odd jobs - mi novio gana unas cuantas libras haciendo chapuzas
5.- Manchester United ...........the toss and decided to kick off - Manchester United ganó el sorteo inicial y decidió sacar
6.- He .........his living as a journalist - se gana la vida como periodista
7.- The baby has ...........weight - el bebé ha ganado peso
8.- Sue worked for some time as an articled clerk ......experience - Sue trabajó durante un tiempo como pasante de abogado para ganar experiencia
9.- Spain ...........Italy 3-0 - España ganó a Italia por 3-0
10.- Spain has ..........five gold medals - España ha ganado cinco medallas de oro.
11.- His retirement is well ......... - Su jubilación está bien ganada
12.- That painting is sure ..........in value - seguro que ese cuadro aumentará de valor
13.- He has ..........a place in the team - se ha ganado un puesto en el equipo
14.- William the Conqueror ...........the battle of Hastings in 1066 - Guillermo el Conquistador ganó la batalla de Hastings in 1066
15.- How much does a teacher in England ............on average? - ¿Cuánto gana un maestro en Inglaterra por término medio?
16.- I think your watch......... - creo que tu reloj adelanta
17.- Can anybody ..........a computer at chess? - ¿puede alguien ganarle/derrotar a un ordenador al ajedrez?
18.- His car is ...........speed - su coche está aumentando su velocidad
19.- Who do you think will ...........the European Cup? - ¿quién crees que ganará la Copa de Europa?
20.- The movie .........seven million dollars on its first day - la película ganó siete millones de dólares el día de su estreno.
